Do you know how much your belongings are really worth?
When we think about the value of our home, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the value of the apartment or house itself. We are much less likely to think about how much it would cost to replace everything we own inside our home.
Furniture, household appliances, children’s items, computers, phones, clothing, sports equipment, bicycles and other everyday belongings can add up to a surprisingly large amount. That is why it is worth taking the time every now and then to estimate how much your belongings are actually worth today.
Your home and belongings change over time
Your home does not stay the same year after year. We buy new furniture and appliances, replace phones and computers, renovate or extend our homes, and acquire new valuable items.
These changes often happen gradually, so we may not even notice how much the value of our home and belongings has changed over the years.
If you have home insurance, it is worth reviewing it at least once a year to make sure that your selected insurance cover and sums insured still reflect your actual situation.
How much are your belongings worth altogether?
This may not be an easy question to answer off the top of your head. One way to approach it is to go through your home room by room and consider how much it would cost to replace everything in each room if you had to buy it all again today.
For example, remember to include:
- furniture and furnishings;
- household and kitchen appliances;
- computers, phones and other electronics;
- clothing, footwear and accessories;
- sports and hobby equipment;
- bicycles and other valuable items;
- children’s items, such as toys, prams and strollers, car seats, children’s furniture and other equipment.
Individually, many of these items may not seem particularly valuable, but when added together, the total can be significant.
