Elama home insurance also covers damage caused by drones

The use of drones has become increasingly common, both as a hobby and as a tool for work. However, this also brings new risks. Elama home insurance helps protect you in the event of accidents involving both your own drone and drones operated by others.

“Drone use is growing rapidly, and so is the risk of related claims. People often do not realise that even a minor accident can result in significant damage,” said Jarmo Nõlvak, Head of Claims at Elama Kindlustus. “That is why it is important to include liability insurance with personal liability cover in your home insurance policy. It provides financial protection in situations like these.”

Protection if your drone causes damage

If your drone causes damage to a third party, whether property damage or bodily injury, this is considered a personal liability insurance claim. For example, if your drone crashes into a neighbour’s window and breaks it, Elama home insurance will cover the damage caused to your neighbour, provided that you have personal liability insurance.

Protection if someone else’s drone causes damage

If your property is damaged by another person’s drone or another flying object, this is considered an accident and the resulting damage is covered. For example, if a drone being flown in your neighbourhood crashes into your house or terrace, this is considered an insured event.

If the person responsible for the damage is identified, Elama has the right to recover the compensation paid from the person who caused the damage.

Exceptions in the event of military action

Damage caused by drones and other flying objects is generally considered accidental damage and is covered by insurance, regardless of whether the device is intended for civilian or military use.

However, insurance cover does not extend to damage directly caused by acts of war or military attacks against Estonia or carried out by Estonia.

If, however, a drone involved in military action between other countries accidentally enters Estonia and causes damage here, this is considered an accident and the damage is covered under home insurance.

Important to remember

When taking out home insurance, it is important to also choose personal liability insurance with sufficient cover. This provides financial protection in situations where an unexpected accident may also cause damage to others.
